w KIDS QUESTION Why Do We Give Gifts at Christmas? Celebrate St. Nicholas At Christmas we celebrate a very important day: Jesus' birthday! God gave us Jesus as a gift to the world. Because Jesus has been born, we are given everlasting life with him. On Christmas we give gifts just like God gave us the gift of Jesus. In addition to our loved ones, we are also called to give gifts to those who are in need. Giving gifts is the perfect way to honor Jesus as the best gift to the world! • Nicholas was born to wealthy Greek parents in the year 270 on the coast of what is now Turkey. • He died on Dec. 6, 343, in Myra, where he was bishop. • St. Nicholas was known for being very generous and would secretly leave gifts for other people. • Put your shoes out on Dec. 5 to get a surprise on Dec. 6, St. Nicholas' feast day.
